The Gates of Human Design
What is a Gate?
In Human Design, a Gate is like an energetic "key" that defines specific traits, behaviors, or qualities in a human. Gates are part of the BodyGraph, which is the central chart in Human Design, and they correspond to the 64 hexagrams of the i'Ching, an ancient Chinese system of wisdom.
Gates provide nuance to your personality and life purpose. They shape how you interact with the world, make decisions, and express yourself. Understanding your defined gates helps you lean into your strengths and recognize your patterns, while your undefined gates can teach you about the areas where you're influenced by external forces.
How are Gates Activated?
The planetary positions in your Human Design chart influence which gates are defined. Each planet "lights up" specific gates and adds its unique energy to them.
Defined gates (colored in) are gates where you consistently express that energy. These are determined by the planetary positions at the time of your birth.
Undefined gates (white or black) are places where you may experience, absorb and amplify the energy of others, depending on your environment or the planitary transits.
Hanging Gate VS Channel:
Each Gate is connected to another gate through a line called a Channel. When both gates at either end of a channel are defined, the channel is activated, and the energy flows freely between the two connected centers. This will define a center in your chart and give you a consistent way of expressing energy and allow for a direct line of communication between the two centers.
Solar Energy - and other planets
Like astrology, in Human Design the Sun represents the way we represent ourselves, our true personality.
During a transit, this energy can affect the collective by offering new energy to play with. Each transit or Gate holds its own unique energy; new opportunities, growth or ways to express can be revealed.
Significance of Gate 41
The Rave New Year
In Human Design, the new year doesn't start on January 1st. The new year is marked by the Sun moving into Gate 41. In 2025 this happens on January 21st at 11:10am (pacific).

Gate 41: Decrease - The Gate of Contraction
Gate 41 is unique compared to the other 63 gates. If we consider that the 64 gates of Human Design can be compared to the 64 codons in our DNA and our 64 codons of DNA fall in a specific order just as the alphabet does, then Gate 41 is the first in the sequence.
It's the only gate in Human Design that initiates - it starts everything.
Gate 41 comes from the Root center, which is a pressure center, giving humans a push towards this energy to Decrease, or trim the dead leaves, get rid of the extra stuff lying around, and ultimately create room for new growth. The energy of Gate 41 is the feeling of bringing your dreams to life, but not all at once, and not all of them. It forces us to focus on one step at a time, not backward but forward.
Someone with Gate 41 in their chart might have the tendency to be stuck in this state of a dreamer. They are seeking ways to feel something outside of themselves. This gate comes from the Root center and reaches towards the Solar Plexus / Emotional Center, giving this person a desire to connect this energy with their emotions or desire to feel.
We must always remember to come back to our intuition by using our Strategy & Authority over anything else.
Deeper Understanding of this Gate
Hexagram 41: Decrease
The Hexagram originates with the ancient Chinese i'Ching - the original oracle that many Chinese business persons still consult today.
The original image painted in black ink that represents the energy of the 41st Hexagram shows a farmer tending to his crops. They are chopping them down to nearly nothing to make room for new growth and hopes of an even more fruitful harvest next season.
This image represents the energy of Decrease. Along with the energy of Gate 41 being the Start Codon in the genetic sequence, I like to think of this energy as clearing and cutting out what we no longer need to make room for new growth.
The 41st Gene Key
The Gene Keys are deeply related to Human Design in the same way the Chinese i'Ching is. Using the wisdom of the Gene Keys to understand the energy of the Gates of Human Design is powerful beyond words.
There are 3 different manifestations of the Gene Keys that align with where the human's frequency lies.
- Shadow is a low vibrational frequency that most of humanity is stuck in. This would be translated as the No-Self in Human Design. This human isn't living in alignment with their energy and usually isn't aware that they are stuck in this Shadow frequency (if they are aware, they might also just be ignoring their own transcendence due to comfortability of fear).
- Gift is a higher vibrational frequency that some of us can reach if we allow ourselves to transmute our vibration into a higher plane of existence; this only comes once we understand and face the Shadow within.
- Siddhi (pronounced like city) is the highest manifestation of this energy that only manifests in certain humans at specific times in their life path and gene discovery. This can be associated with true enlightenment.
Shadow - Fantasy
At the societal level, the Shadow of Fantasy can manifest as escapist behaviors, such as overindulgence in entertainment, social media, or consumerism. It reflects humanity's collective resistance to confronting deeper truths or engaging in meaningful action. This human is a dreamer, maybe not so much of a doer.
Gift - Anticipation
The Gift of Anticipation carries the energy of aligned foresight and energetic preparation for what is to come. At this frequency, anticipation is not about longing for an imagined future, but rather sensing the potential for transformation and aligning with the natural leader within. It represents the ability to tap into the collective evolutionary pulse and prepare for new cycles of growth and creation.
Siddhi - Emanation
The Siddhi of Emanation represents the highest frequency of this energy, where the boundaries of individuality dissolve, and one becomes a pure expression of universal truth. At this level, the concept of You as a separate being ceases to exist, and what remains is the effortless radiance of divine energy flowing through you.
To live this Siddhi is to transcend the human experience entirely, becoming a direct expression of Source. It is rare and spontaneous, often occurring as a grace-filled moment of enlightenment where the divine truth shines through, and all illusions fall away.
